Benjamino takes us on a creative’s journey - from the forest floor to thanking the Lord - in their latest music video In The Shadows.
Evocative, dramatic and containing more chances to sing along than a shower with perfect acoustics, In The Shadows is both a call to arms and a cry for help. The song speaks of the inherent need to express oneself, and this music video represents all the challenges a creative must face.
Directed by Declan Arrighi, the music video is the third project that the pair have collaborated on since 2021’s Golden Age and Play Her. The verses of the video, displayed in a noir-type black and white style, depict Benjamino in the midst of the creative process - from writing lyrics, to the laborious tasks of setting up, through to recording vocals and even mixing. The choruses, in full colour and stunning widescreen, represent the inner feeling of a creative endeavour - colour and passion emanating in a live performance from Benjamino’s band.
Filmed and produced at DROP. Studios, essentially Benjamino’s second home, In The Shadows engages the audience with a creative alternative to a Behind-The-Scenes style video. Arrighi’s directorial prowess is on full display, showing stark contrasts between ‘process’ and the ‘outcome’ with some stunning shots and nifty editing.
”I’ve always said that this song feels like it wouldn’t be out of place in a Hitchcock film. When Declan sent over the first edit with the verses in Black and White and a 4:3 ratio I knew it was the perfect visual representation. My thriller-film dreams had come true. To then contrast with choruses, with such a burst of colour and energy, I think really sums up the whole experience of creating a song in the 21st century. ” - Benjamino
With lyrics like “Each day we thank the Lord, and in those moments forget our fears and the thrill of it all, with hope that we’ll answer the call”, In The Shadows demonstrates Benjamino’s ability to display binary opposites:
”This song is about two things: Courage and Apprehension. The “lords” referenced in the song are the people we have admiration for; our childhood heroes, leaders in our field or even just friends we think are cool. We can appreciate what they do because they have had the courage to express themselves and put their work out into the world. But having the courage to put yourself out there is much easier said than done” - Benjamino
In The Shadows MUSIC VIDEO is out Wednesday, 27 March 2024.
